Your Monday Starts on Saturday
Have you ever had one of those weekends where you felt like you relaxed, had fun, and genuinely enjoyed yourself, but by Sunday night, you somehow felt even more tired than you did on Friday?
Me too.
It seems backwards, doesn’t it?
After all, weekends are supposed to leave us feeling rested.
Especially in the summer, when they’re filled with all the good things - barbecues with family, slow mornings with a cup of tea, afternoons by the pool, trips to the farmers’ market, evenings on the deck, and maybe a walk while the sun starts to set.
Those are the moments we look forward to all week.
So why do we sometimes head into Monday feeling like we need another weekend?
I’ve been thinking about that lately, and I don’t think it’s because we’re doing too much.
I think it’s because we spend so much of our weekend taking care of everyone else that we forget to do a few little things that take care of Monday Me.
For a long time, I thought if I wanted Monday to feel easier, I needed to make my weekends more productive.
Get more done.
Cross more things off the list.
Meal prep every meal.
Clean the whole house.
Organize the pantry while I was at it.
Funny enough, that never left me feeling refreshed.
These days, I’ve realized something different.
The Monday version of me doesn’t need a perfect weekend.
She just appreciates it when Saturday and Sunday are a little kinder.
Sometimes that means floating in the pool for half an hour instead of rushing to the next errand.
Sometimes it’s sitting outside with a cup of tea before everyone else is awake.
Sometimes it’s throwing a few extra chicken breasts on the barbecue, so Monday’s lunch is already halfway done.
Sometimes it’s washing the berries when I get home because I know Future Me will be thankful.
And sometimes…
It’s saying, “The dust can wait.”
If you’ve been around here for a while, you already know my house looks a little more… lived in during the summer.
If the sun is shining, chances are you’ll find me outside.
Don’t get me wrong, I love a clean house.
That’s why I have a wonderful local cleaner who comes every couple of weeks during the summer. I get to support another local woman in business, and I get to spend more time enjoying this beautiful Ontario summer.
For me, that’s money well spent.
Because the dust will still be there tomorrow.
Summer won’t.
I’ve also stopped trying to make every weekend “count.”
Not every weekend has to be packed with projects or perfectly planned meals.
Sometimes the best weekends are the ones where you simply catch your breath.
I think we forget that rest isn’t just sleeping in.
Rest can look like laughing around the patio table.
An evening bonfire.
Watching your grandkids play.
Going for an evening walk.
Or sitting in a lounge chair with a good book and absolutely no agenda.
Those moments might not look productive.
But they do something much more important.
They refill us.
And I’ve learned, especially over the last few years, that when I enjoy my weekend while taking care of a few little things, Monday feels different.
Not perfect.
Just… lighter.
Just… steadier.
So this weekend, instead of asking yourself, “How much can I get done?”
Maybe ask yourself…
“What would make Monday Me smile?”
Maybe it’s washing the berries.
Maybe it’s grilling a little extra chicken.
Maybe it’s going for a walk.
Maybe it’s floating in the pool for twenty more minutes.
Or maybe it’s watching one more sunset before heading inside.
Because the goal isn’t to spend your weekend preparing for Monday.
It’s to enjoy your weekend while doing a few small things that make Monday feel just a little lighter.
I think that’s what real-life wellness looks like.
