Why I’m Drinking Water Before My Morning Tea (And Why I’m Keeping the Habit)
If you’re anything like me, your morning starts with one thing…
Tea.
For some of you, it’s coffee. For me, it’s a hot cup of tea that signals the day has officially begun.
But lately, I’ve been trying to do one simple thing before that first sip.
A glass of water.
Not because it’s the latest wellness trend.
Not because someone on social media told me it would change my life.
Simply because it’s a small habit that helps me feel a little better, and those are the kinds of habits I love sharing.
After all, healthy habits for real life aren’t usually the flashy ones. They’re the little things we can actually stick with.
Your Body Wakes Up a Little Dry
Think about it.
You go seven, eight, maybe even nine hours without drinking anything while you sleep.
Even if you had plenty of water the day before, your body wakes up a little dehydrated.
So before asking it to tackle caffeine, breakfast, text messages, kids, work, or whatever the day throws at you, giving it a glass of water just makes sense.
It’s a simple way of saying, “Good morning. Let’s get things going.”
It Can Help Wake Up Your Digestion
One of the biggest reasons I’ve been paying more attention to this habit is digestion.
If you’ve been following along for a while, you know I like to keep things real. Lately, I’ve had a few days where my digestion wasn’t quite as regular as usual, even though I hadn’t changed much else.
It reminded me that digestion isn’t just about what we eat.
It’s also about hydration.
Water helps your digestive system get moving after a night’s sleep and supports healthy bowel movements throughout the day. While it isn’t a miracle cure for constipation, starting your morning hydrated gives your body one more thing working in its favour.
Sometimes our bodies don’t need another supplement.
Sometimes they just need water.
Your Tea or Coffee May Feel Better
Have you ever had your morning cuppa hit a little too hard?
The jitters.
That slightly anxious feeling.
An upset stomach.
Hydrating first can help your body handle caffeine a little more comfortably. It doesn’t mean you have to give up your favourite morning drink—it simply gives your body something it needs before adding a stimulant.
For my tea lovers, the same idea applies.
Your morning cup isn’t going anywhere.
We’re just letting water go first.
Your Kidneys Will Thank You
While you sleep, your kidneys continue filtering waste and balancing fluids.
Giving your body fresh water first thing in the morning helps support that natural process.
It’s one of those behind-the-scenes jobs your body does every single day without asking for much in return.
Small Habits Beat Perfect Plans
One thing I’ve learned over the years is that we often make healthy living far more complicated than it needs to be.
We think we need:
A brand-new meal plan.
A fresh workout program.
Expensive supplements.
The perfect Monday start.
Meanwhile, the little habits often make the biggest difference.
Going for a walk after dinner.
Adding vegetables to lunch.
Getting to bed 30 minutes earlier.
Drinking a glass of water before your morning tea or coffee.
They’re not exciting.
But they’re sustainable.
And sustainable habits are the ones that stick.
It’s the End of July… Not the End of Summer
As I write this, we’re wrapping up July.
Somehow.
I honestly don’t know how that happened.
Maybe your summer has looked like mine.
A little less routine.
A few more ice cream stops.
Later nights.
BBQs.
Road trips.
Grandkids.
Patios.
Life.
And honestly?
That’s okay.
I’m not interested in spending August trying to “make up” for July.
Instead, I’m looking for one or two simple habits that help me feel good while still enjoying the rest of summer.
For me, drinking water before my morning tea is one of them.
Give It a Try
Tomorrow morning, before you make your coffee or tea, pour yourself a glass of water.
It doesn’t have to be fancy.
No lemon.
No electrolytes.
No expensive powders.
Just water.
Then enjoy your morning drink exactly like you always do.
Sometimes the healthiest thing we can do isn’t adding something complicated.
It’s simply taking care of the basics.
And that’s exactly what real health for real life looks like.
I’d love to hear from you.
Are you team coffee or team tea? And do you already drink water first thing in the morning, or is this a habit you’re willing to try?
