The Season Before Summer

I don’t know about you, but this school year has felt long.

Maybe it was the winter.

Maybe it’s the stage of life I’m in.

Maybe it’s the endless cycle of activities, part-time jobs, the start of horse show season, and trying to coordinate everyone’s schedules.

Whatever the reason, I’m more than ready for summer.

And yet, here we are in that strange season right before it arrives.

The season of final exams.

The season of wrapping up another school year.

The season where you spend half your day asking,

“What time do you need a ride?”

As much as I’m looking forward to slower mornings and a different routine, this time of year always feels busy.

There are more places to be.

More things to remember.

More schedule changes.

More last-minute texts.

And if we’re not careful, it can become really easy to put ourselves at the bottom of the list.

That’s usually when I remind myself that healthy habits aren’t just for the calm seasons of life.

They’re for the busy ones too.

Not in a perfect way.

Not in an all-or-nothing way.

Just in a way that helps us feel a little more like ourselves.

For me, that might look like:

• Going for a walk before the day gets away from me.

• Drinking my water while I sit waiting for a pickup.

• Making a simple dinner, even if that dinner is frozen pizza and a bagged salad.

• Taking a few minutes outside to enjoy some sunshine.

• Getting to bed at a reasonable hour, even when the to-do list isn’t finished.

Nothing revolutionary.

Nothing that would make headlines.

Just the basics.

The older I get, the more I realize that the basics are often what carry us through the busiest seasons.

Not another plan.

Not another challenge.

Not another perfect routine.

Just a handful of habits that help us feel our best.

That’s something I’ve been reminding myself of a lot lately.

Between family, teenagers, horse shows, and working behind the scenes on Back On Track, life has felt full.

Good full.

But full.

And during seasons like this, I think there’s a lot of value in letting “good enough” be good enough.

Maybe dinner is simpler.

Maybe the laundry waits another day.

Maybe some things stay on the to-do list a little longer than we’d planned.

That’s okay.

Summer is almost here.

The schedules will change.

The routines will shift again.

But for now, I’m trying to appreciate this season for what it is, even if I’m also counting down the days until summer break.

And if life feels a little busy for you right now, too, maybe this is your reminder:

The basics still work.

And sometimes that’s enough.
